Railway Memorabilia Display
Aldridge Library situated in Rookery Lane Aldridge, is currently displaying an exhibition of Railway Memorabilia courtesy of Chasewater Railway Museum. The display is housed in two glass cabinets.
To compliment the cabinet display is a screen presentation of the aspects of Chasewater Railway.
The display which was organised by Susan Satterthwaite (a volunteer at Chasewater Railway) will run until the end of May. The Library is open from Tuesdays until Saturdays, (closed Mondays & Sundays).
The artifacts displayed are just a selection of the many on display in the free to enter, Chasewater Railway Museum, which is situated at Brownhills West Station, and is open on train running days.
Why not visit and relive the past.
Cannock Chase Mining Historical Society Books
Cannock Chase Mining Historical Society Books

Did you or one of your family work at one of the many Collieries in the Cannock & Rugeley area. If so why not get one of the mining books published by the Cannock Chase Mining Historical Society. There are 18 books in the series, each one covering one or more of the local Collieries. A very informative collection, written by the miners, who worked at them. These are available from Chasewater Railway Museum. Perhaps an ideal Christmas present. Contact me if you need more information.

Chasewater Railway Museum – ‘Things that got away!’
Chasewater Railway Museum
Things that got away!
From time to time various people advise us of the latest offerings on ebay, mostly these are of little interest and on occasions of dubious authenticity, for example, the Hawthorn Leslie worksplate 2780 of 1909. Very odd this one as our loco ‘Asbestos’, resident at Chasewater since 1968, came with worksplates affixed, which are still retained on the loco.
However, we were alerted recently to an enamel wagon plate – ‘When empty return to Littleton Collieries Sidings Penkridge. LM&S Rly’. This would have been a nice addition to our collection of local artefacts, but, despite the best efforts of Rob Cadman, acting on our behalf, we were unlucky with a bidder being found at £150 but prepared to go much higher.
Following this disappointment we then heard of a member who spotted a rather nice Midland Railway, Walsall Wood to Walsall third class return ticket available on ebay. Tickets to or from Walsall Wood and Brownhills (Midland) are pretty scarce and this example realised £102, which I suspect rather surprised our man who had expressed interest in it on our behalf.
Our thanks go to Rob Cadman, Simon Swain and Kevin Pettifor for trying their best for the museum.
Walsall Wood opened 1st July 1884 and closed 31st March 1930, along with Brownhills (Midland), the latter having been renamed Brownhills Watling Street 2nd June 1924. So two items which we would have liked ‘got away’ – but we have photos.
Chasewater Railway Museum – Littleton Colliery warning notice

Littleton Colliery warning notice
An opportunity presented itself recently to acquire by way of private purchase half a dozen items of local colliery railway interest. Not since the 1960s and early 1970s, when in that period a good relationship existed between the Railway Preservation Society and local National Coal Board management and which resulted in several donations of interest has the chance to obtain in bulk such star items for the museum collection. Finally a possibly unique cast iron sign headed The Littleton Collieries Ltd. The last of the six items, the 3 nameplates and 2 worksplates have been posted recently.

The notice before the paint-brush got close!
The notice in situ – left of centre. We think located near to the Penkridge end of the Littleton Colliery to Penkridge line.

Chasewater Railway Museum – Another Nameplate

Another Nameplate
Carol Ann No.1
or, as she started out in life,
Carol Ann No.5
0-6-0ST Hunslet 1821/1936. Bought new. Still at Holly Bank 1957 – since scrapped.
Robert Nelson No.4 and Carol Ann No.5 (Hunslet 0-6-0ST 1800 and 1821 respectively, built 1936) were named after the Colliery Manager’s two children.
.
On transfer to Littleton Colliery in NCB days – November 1959 – Carol Ann was renumbered ‘1’ by grinding the ‘5’ off the nameplate and screwing in a ‘1’. This was because Littleton already had a loco ‘Littleton No.5’
