Acquisition from the Cannock Chase Mining Historical Society

This is the latest, and probably the last, book to be published by the Cannock Chase Mining Historical Society.

The Cannock Chase Coalfield has been covered by the series of books written by various authors over the past few years. They are all on sale in the Chasewater Railway Museum, which is open on train running days.

Mick Drury, who wrote this book, and others in the series, starting with the Conduit and Littleton Collieries, followed by William Harrison Company Ltd., The Lesser Known Coalmines of the Cannock Chase Coalfield, Cannock Old Coppice Colliery (Hawkins Colliery) and, with the late Jack Sunley and Maurice Davies, Education, Training and Rescue in the Cannock Chase Coalfield.

The Cannock Chase Coalfield was fully covered by this series of books from the Cannock Chase Mining Historical Society and this left Mick, who was instrumental in the formation of the Society and, for a time, Chairman, with the completion of this book ‘Boots All My Life’.

All of the books are available in the Chasewater Railway Museum (‘Boots All My Life’ – £14.00) or by using the link below.

Cannock Chase Mining Historical Society Books

Did you or one of your family work at one of the many Collieries in the Cannock & Rugeley area. If so why not get one of the mining books published by the Cannock Chase Mining Historical Society. There are 18 books in the series, each one covering one or more of the local Collieries. A very informative collection, written by the miners, who worked at them. These are available from Chasewater Railway Museum. Perhaps an ideal Christmas present. Contact me if you need more information.

New Items

Three new items of mining memorabilia spotted on e bay by Kevin Pettifor – who gave Barry Bull a call and purchased them. Thanks again Kev.

This first one is a lapel badge of the Mines Rescue Service, National Coal Board.

The second one was awarded to Arnold Arrowsmith for five years service with the NCB Mines Rescue Service, West Midlands Division, Sneyd, 1955.

The third one was awarded to Arnold Arrowsmith for ten years service with the NCB Mines Rescue Service, West Midlands Division, Sneyd. This one is hall-marked silver.

Two new badges

These two examples of lapel badges added to the collection were used for free travel by miners in South Wales, restricted for use between stations in the Pontypool area and various halts provided at such collieries as Hafodyrynys, situated between Pontypool Clarence Street and Crumlin (High Level).

These badges are numbered, one NCB 856 C.St, and the pther NCB 49 P.Rd and are round, 1⅜” diameter.

C. St = Clarence Street, P.Rd = Pontypool Road.

They were made by H.W.Miller Ltd., Branston Street, Birmingham 19.

If anyone should have any further information about this sort of lapel badge, please let us know.

Hunslet Worksplate

Two locomotive worksplates comprising of a cast iron Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns Ltd, 7292 of 1953 and Hunslet 3789 of 1953 have come to Chasewater Railway Museum, along with the three nameplates.

The Hunslet was delivered to Chasetown numbered 3 and was a replacement for the aged fleet of Victorian locos, she later saw service at Cannock Wood and Granville where she met her end after a life of just 16 years.

Both locomotives were of the Austerity type, the RSH coming to Littleton Colliery from its previous owner the War Department, in May 1947, originally WD 71483 she became number 6 at Littleton being cut up there in Oct. 1970.
