Although this post has been published previously, I still found it to be interesting, and in the last four years new readers may discover this blog – hope so !!

Although I can’t imagine the first items shown will ever be seen in the museum, they do show something of the variation in size between items offered.This photo shows two of four signal posts which have been at Chasewater for many years and have recently been removed from the undergrowth by the overflow car park.One of them is clearly stamped with what is presumably the date, 1915.

They came from the Pinnox Junction area of Stoke-on Trent.North Stafford Railway locomotive about to leave Pinnox Junction with coal from Whitfield Colliery around the turn of the 20th century. To the right, the Tunstall Lower Branch railway from Longport to Tunstall Junction on the Loop Line and bridge carrying the Whitfield line from Pinnox to Greenhead Wharf. Staffs pasttrack

The next item is a ‘Trains Cross Here’ sign.This was found in the mid 1960s in the Wyrley Branch of the Wyrley & Essington Canal which is now under Vernon Way, in the New Invention, Essington area.  The railway crossing of the A4124 Lichfield Road from Holly Bank Colliery to the canal basin at Short heath was about 150 yards away on the other side of the M6.  It seems logical to assume that this was where the sign was originally placed.This is how the sign would have looked when in position.  Although this photo was taken on the same line, it is probably not the same  sign, being a bit too far away.  The sign was donated to the museum by Mr. D.Townsend.

The third item is the smallest.This is a badge of the Walsall Locomotive Society donated by the museum’s Chairman, David Bathurst.

We have also had a number of items loaned to us, including the nameplate ‘Beatty’ and number plate ‘139’ from an ex Dorman Long Hawthorn Leslie 12″ x 20″ 0-4-0ST preserved at Telford Steam Railway.

And this very nice Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company noticewarning cyclists to keep off the tow-path.  (With the date being 1901, I don’t suppose that our well-known local cyclist would have been affected!!).

Some more April donations.

We were given these items over the weekend By Graham Wilkes, and, except for the badge, local stuff.DSCF0186

The badge is a NUR Orpington Branch, dated summer 1989.

This is a train staff ticket for the Littleworth Railway giving authorisation to travel from Wimblebury Junction to Cooper’s Lodge Junction.

The final 4 items are single train tickets from local destinations to Walsall.DSCF0190DSCF0191DSCF0196DSCF0193

The prices vary from 10d to 1/3d, these days approximately 4p to 6p.

The last ticket is interesting in that it is a ‘Forces Leave’ single from Brindley Heath.  This station was situated between Hednesford and Rugeley at the bottom of the notorious ‘Kitbag Hill’, so called because the first job new recruits arriving for training had to do was to lug their kitbags up a fairly steep and long hill.

The photograph below was taken by a long-time friend of Chasewater Railway, the late Roger Shenton.

The latest items added to the Chasewater Railway Museum’s Collection were purchased over the weekend.

The first one is a reversible Carriage Destination Board, Walsall and Rugeley.

As can be seen, this is painted white with black lettering and is made of wood.

The other item is a cast iron Wagon Plate, black with white lettering.

This first one is a map of the London Midland & Scottish Railway from Aldridge to Brownhills, via Walsall Wood, showing the chamge to a single line in 1934.  Somehow it had evaded the camera for some time, after being donated to the museum!

This Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns worksplate has also been with us for some time, since purchased by our curator.  It was very nicely painted by Jason Busby.

The Midland Railway Royal Saloon – A Happy Ending

The previous post stated that this vehicle was at Derby on a long term loan, giving the impression that it still belonged to Chasewater Railway – this is not the case – this post explains subsequent events.

Midland Royal Saloon

This unique example of Midland Railway Regal coachbuilding has been purchased by the RPS (West Midlands District) from British Railways at a cost of £300. This was only possible with a loan of £240 from a generous member.
The loan is being paid back at the rate of £10 per month to this fine member, who wished to remain anonymous. His name was released at the AGM but to save further embarrassment, we will not mention it in these columns, but let it be ‘broadcast’ by word of mouth.

The final item on the agenda was the consideration of an offer from the Midland Railway Trust based at Butterley for the purchase of our ex Midland Railway Royal Saloon Coach. The history of the coach was briefly outlined. The coach was on loan to Derby Corporation for a further 17 years and they had a 25 year option open to them after that.
The Trust have spent a considerable amount of money upon the coach so far and wish to finish the job properly but don’t feel able to unless the coach is their property. They reckon they will have spent well in excess of £10,000 on the coach by the time it is complete. Inside the Royal Saloon
As the Chasewater Light Railway Society was in a difficult position – in effect our hands were tied – it was decided to let the coach go. It was unlikely to come to Chasewater in the majority of our members’ lifetimes and, as in the case of the ‘E1’, if it had not been for the Railway Preservation Society then it would have gone to the scrap heap years ago, so at least some satisfaction could be derived from that. The coach is to be exchanged for the following:-
1. £600 in cash

2. Equipment surplus to the Midland Railway Trust’s needs, such as crossing gates, signals, ancillary equipment, etc., but in demand at Chasewater – to the value of £1,000 plus

3. The ex Walsall Gas Works Sentinel Locomotive (S9632/1957) plus spares, which will be in working order when it arrives at Chasewater, hopefully before Easter.
